The concertina was invented by Charles Wheatstone, and the earliest examples, which he called the symphonium, were made in 1829. Its huge popularity in the 19th century was diminished by the arrival of the piano accordion in the 20th. The folk revival has see the concertina back in demand, There are three quite different fingering systems in common use: Anglo, English, and Duet.

English Concertina

Introduction: The English concertina is fully chromatic and each button plays the same note on both push and pull of the bellows. The scale comes by alternating notes from each end of the instrument, which makes it easy to play fast runs. This system tends to suit players who read music as the buttons line up exactly with written music with the stave lines on the left hand and spaces on the right.

Great service and advice from Steve at RedCow, this came today really quickly thanks. it’s a fiendish little thing with lots of character. Very excited to have a new instrument to challenge me , it will lift my spirits ( but maybe not the neighbours)

      Thank you. Steve

A sweet concertina. It plays so well and has a lovely tone.
The instrument was delivered fast as promised.

I’ve had mine for a couple of weeks now so I thought I’d leave a review. Great advice from Steve and very quick service. The instrument itself is fine. A bit rough around the edges as you’d expect from something at this price, but the tone is quite sweet and it seems perfectly playable (though with this being my 1st concertina, I obviously don’t have anything to compare it with). The gig bag it comes with is useful for keeping the dust off it and carrying it around the house, but isn’t padded so doesn’t offer much protection. On Steve’s recommendation, I also bought the Absolute Beginners book and I’m enjoying working my way through that. The only (very minor) potential issue I can see there is that the book assumes a 30 button concertina has G sharp buttons, but the Scarlatti has A flats instead, so the suggested fingerings will need to be changed once I get to those pieces (still struggling to get my fingers around the G major scale, so that’s going to be some time off).

Really pleased with my new concertina! I bought a cheap Anglo off Amazon sometime ago and it has been great for basics, but the jump in quality is profound. The tone of my new Scarlatti is sweet and very melodic. I thought that I might struggle with the different finger positions, but after an afternoon of literally ‘playing around’ a variety of music books I am already remembering the new positions. Thought I would struggle more as I am used to playing piano as well but now I have my head round it, the positions are all falling into place. Delivery was prompt and my new ‘baby’ well padded and packaged. Even the feel of the concertina is an ‘up’ in quality to what I have been playing on. I am completely delighted and this is the best Birthday present I have ever treated myself to! Many thanks to Red Cow, will highly recommend you!

I received my English concertina today, thx for the fast delivery Steve from Red Cow.
It sounds very nice. I takes some time to getting used to, until a while ago I had ons on loan from a friend.
Only downside, the G sometimes lingers a bit, hopefully that will improve with practice.
I think I will have a lot of fun with this instrument, normally I play on a cromatic button accordion (Roland and Accordeola). The concertina seems nice for the Irish and Scottish tunes.

I am delighted with my new concertina.
I would highly recommend Steve for his patience and help in getting me on the road to playing the concertina.
The Dave Mallinson book is a great help.

A great quality beginners concertina. Plays really well for the price. It looks the same as the one from Ireland and its half the price.
