Traditional Tunes-Frank Kidson
Published in 1891 in an edition of only 200 copies, Frank Kidson’s volume of Traditional Tunes assured his place in history – along with Lucy Broadwood, Sabine Baring Gould, and William Barret – as one of the pioneers of song collection from the English oral tradition whose independent efforts anticipated both the foundation of the Folk Song Society and the development of the wider ‘folk’ movement. Lucy Broadwood said of Kidson’s book: ‘Its appearance marks an important event in the history of our folk song, for the book – a mine of beautiful tunes and quaint words – is the earliest published collection of unharmonised and “unembellished” English traditional airs and texts to be accompanied by the annotations of a scholarly collector.
